Vineyard

Frogtown encompasses 32 acres of vineyards on the rolling hills of the Dahlonega Plateau in Lumpkin County, Georgia. The elevation of our vineyards extend from 1675 to 1825 feet above sea level. We believe the contours of our hills represent some of the steepest slopes of all viticultural areas in the eastern part of the United States. Our sandy clay loam soil, steep slopes, and directional aspect of our vineyards, create a most unique viticultural environment for our grape vines.

On these 32 acres of vineyard, we have planted 15 different varieties. The red varieties include: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese, Tannat, Touriga, and Norton. The white varieties include: Chardonnay, Viognier, Marsanne, Rousanne, Souvignon Blanc, Muscat, Vidal, and Seyval. Much care has gone into deciding exactly where to plant each variety in our vineyards. In total 18,000 grape vines capable of producing up to 180 tons of premium wine grapes are planted.

Three trellis systems are used at our vineyards. The Open-Lyre Trellis and the Geneva Double Curtain Trellis are divided systems employing quadrilateral trained vines. These two divided trellis systems were specially selected for the growing conditions of our North-East Georgia mountain macro climate. Frogtown also uses, on a limited basis, the vertical shoot position system, which is widely used all over the world.
